What all are the problems that affects Cornea?
Cornea is the outermost protective layer of eye. It is the one of the most crucial portion since it provides barrier against dirt and germs that are floating in the air.
There are various diseases that are associated with cornea-
- Keratoconus: This condition occurs when the normal dome-shaped cornea thins out and develops into cone-like bulge. This causes vision impairment. It causes a slight blurring and distortion in its early stages.
- Dystrophy: It is a genetic disease which causes degenerative changes in innermost cells of cornea. It effects both eyes and diminishes severe decline in the vision due to clouding.
- Keratitis: This is the inflammation in cornea which covers the pupil and iris. It is mostly caused due to infection by bacteria, virus or fungus which is infectious as well. But, some non-infectious Keratitis also occurs due to some minor injury or by wearing contact lenses.
- Xerophthalmia: Due to the deficiency of Vitamin A, this problem takes root in the eye. It dries out the tear ducts and causes night-blindness. Some white spots could be seen in the eye.
- Astigmatism: It is a simply a problem in which the eye cannot focus the light properly. It is a kind of refractive error.
- Corneal Abrasion: It is called a scratched eye which takes place due to some injury. It causes sensitivity, red eyes and discomfort in viewing. This happens when cells are lost in the cornea.
- Bullous Keratopathy: It is a pathological condition in which the endothelium cannot maintain the dehydrated state of cornea, thus it is caused by edema of cornea.
Symptoms of Corneal Disease:
A person who is suffering from corneal disease can experience-
- Pain in the eye
- Blurry vision
- Eye inflammation
- Headache and nausea
- Light sensitivity
Diagnosis of Corneal Disease:
The Ophthalmologists are the specialists who check and detect any defect related to the eye. Our doctors at Jagdamba ensures complete and holistic care to your eyes. With the latest and advanced techniques, we diagnose the specific problem and provide the best possible solution for them.
- The regular examination is conducted by the slit lamp microscope
- Corneal Topography: It is used to create 3D structure of cornea’s curvature which gives us the detailed description of shape and strength of eye
- Keratometry: It takes place with the help of an instrument called keratometer which measures the curvature of cornea. It is important in detecting keratoconus or even during cataract surgery.
- Pachymetry: It also measures the thickness of cornea. It helps in detecting some defects like Fuchs Dystrophy in the eye.
- Confocal Microscopy: It is microscopic instrument which takes a lot of pictures and that too within seconds. It studies the corneal endothelium closely by magnifying it thousands of times.
Treatment of Cornea:
- Cornea Transplant: In this method of treatment, the damaged corneal tissue is replaced with the donated one. The graft is extracted from a disease free person for the patient. Jagdamba exercises best corneal transplant in India with its highly qualified doctors.
- Lamellar Keratoplasty: It is an advanced type of Corneal Transplantation where the corneal stroma is removed replacing it with a normal functioning endothelium.
- For the infections, eye drops are used to remove the inflammation or itching
- Eye aberrations are fixed with temporary patching or bandage contact lens.
